Head herdsman Derek herding lambs

What do you call a sheep who likes to tell jokes?

……… A EWE-MORIST!

Dad joke aside, it is lambing time at Foxhollow!  I sat down with our herdsman, Derek to gain some fun facts about our flock.

HOW MANY SHEEP GRAZE ON FOXHOLLOW PASTURES?

We have 23 ewes (Mama’s) and one ram on the farm.  Each ewe can give birth to 1-4 lambs at a time! Twins are quite common.

WHAT BREED OF SHEEP DO  WE HAVE?

Our breed is a St. Croix/Katahdin mix.  This breed mix is pretty cool because unlike many breeds that grow wool, ours have hair. This means we don’t have to shear them in the summer because they shed their winter coats on their own (as you can see in the photo above). St. Croix are known for having superior genetics and parasite resistance.

WHY DO WE RAISE SHEEP ON OUR CATTLE FARM?

Adding sheep to our farm increases its biodiversity; sheep will eat weeds that our cows dislike.  This makes for a more balanced and healthier ecosystem.

HOW MANY LAMBS WILL BE BORN THIS SPRING?

We expect 30-40 lambs to be born this year all born in April and May.

HAPPY SPRING!
